Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach me at jolamecanitherapy@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

In our first session, my focus is on getting to know you, not just your story, but also your relationships, your strengths, and what has you feeling stuck right now. We move at your pace. I’ll ask questions to deepen my understanding, and I’ll also explain the process along the way. I believe people do better in therapy when they know what’s happening, so I’m very transparent about interventions and techniques. Think of the first session as a starting point where we map out your goals and begin building a safe, supportive relationship

Everyone’s journey looks different. Some people come for a few sessions to work through something specific, while others find value in longer-term support. We’ll check in regularly on how therapy is feeling for you. I don’t rush the process, we go at a pace that feels manageable and meaningful for you.

I work with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationship struggles, parenting stress, and life transitions. I also specialize in supporting people who feel pressure from family or cultural expectations, as well as those navigating identity, self-esteem, or attachment wounds. My 10 years in social work also gave me experience supporting individuals with concurrent disorders, addictions, and homelessness, so I bring a deep understanding of complex challenges.

Yes. Everything you share is private and confidential, with the exception of rare safety concerns (such as risk of harm to yourself, others, or child protection). We’ll go over this clearly in the first session so you know exactly where the boundaries are.

I provide in-person therapy at my office in Pickering — a bright, comfortable space where you can feel at ease. I also offer online therapy for anyone in Ontario, which works especially well for clients who prefer the convenience of meeting from home. Both options are equally effective, and we can decide together what feels best for you.

I believe being upfront about cost helps you feel more empowered, so here it is:

  • Children & Adolescents (Ages 9–17): $145 per 50-minute session
  • Individual Therapy (Adults 18+): $165 per 50-minute session
  • Couples Therapy: $200 per 50-minute session, or $290 for a deeper dive in a 90-minute session

Many extended health insurance plans cover therapy with a Registered Social Worker and/or Psychotherapist, so I encourage you to check your provider to see what’s eligible. I’m also a registered provider under NIHB, offering services through Express Scripts for eligible First Nations and Inuit individuals. Payment is easy—via e-transfer either right before or after our session, and I’ll send you a receipt.

That’s completely normal. Many people worry about what to say or whether they’ll feel comfortable. My approach is warm, down-to-earth, and I even use humor at times, because therapy doesn’t always have to feel heavy. We’ll create a space where you can be yourself, where it’s okay to take your time, and where you feel supported, not judged.

I integrate several evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Narrative Therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and trauma-focused care. I also bring in mind-body techniques because I believe healing happens when we connect what we think, what we feel, and how the body responds. You’ll always know what we’re doing and why, because I provide psychoeducation and am very transparent about the process.

Yes, I work with children and teens ages 9 and older. With kids, I use developmentally appropriate approaches such as play therapy, art, and trauma-focused CBT to help them express themselves in ways that feel natural. With teens, I focus on building trust and validating their experiences so they feel understood.

I also believe that supporting parents is an important part of the process. Every few sessions, I offer a complimentary 15-minute phone call with parents to share updates, provide guidance, and strengthen the support system at home. This way, therapy supports not just the child, but the whole family.

Yes. I use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), a powerful approach that helps couples understand their conflict cycles, repair disconnection, and rebuild emotional intimacy. My role is to guide both partners in slowing things down, finding safer ways to communicate, and reconnecting to what matters most in the relationship.

I offer in-person therapy in Pickering and surrounding Durham Region. For clients elsewhere in Ontario, from Toronto to Kingston and Ottawa, I provide secure online sessions.
